After several hours of contentious debate, One Flagler, the project that had the city abuzz is no more. The buzz and debate that was generated from this enormous project, ended after the city commissioners voted against the project. One Flagler, Related Cos. 25 story Class A office building had its eyes set on a piece of waterfront land that is currently zoned for 5 stories. Terms like Okeechobee Business District were created and marketed across the city. Colorful flyers and t-shirts were worn to the meeting Monday night, but all this was still not enough to sway the commissioners to approve this project.
Opponents of the project voiced their opinions and concerns regarding that strain this new construction project would put on an already overcrowded corridor of Downtown West Palm Beach. The city was also said to be breaking its word on a pact that was made in 1996 to limit waterfront construction, east of S. Olive Ave to 5 stories. This project, in particular, would have violated that agreement in every way.
